Fall/Winter 2007
Immersed in the writing of her feature film, Fierce Beauty, Filmmaker, Kristi Moya's journey unfolds in true Apache Way. When she is not writing, Moya roams the vast lands that were lost but are still called home by the Chiricahua Apache. This is the place where her great great grandmother, Cesarita, called home, as did Cesarita's mother. Of her experiences in New Mexico, Moya says, "My story is profoundly enriched by The People who have accepted me and shown me how to listen to the heartbeat of our sacred land."
Cesarita's journey of the heart is deeply entwined with her fight for the land. Her lover, White Wolf, a renegade Chiricahua Apache warrior is her guide. The intensity of their fight to protect the land and culture is the source of their passion for each other.
Cesarita is Mestiza, mixed-blood; her Spanish blood wars with her Apache blood. In her struggle to know where she belongs, her fight for the land is her connection to herself. White Wolf, who understands his interrelation with the land, must fight two wars, one to keep his people from being exterminated and one to preserve the Traditions.
Whether the land is physically "owned" or it is owned in the heart ultimately is the story of Cesarita and White Wolf. It continues to be the struggle of the Chiricahua Apache Nde' today.
